Who are we?

Flutterbys is an group that has been created to support the whole family of young people that are experiencing difficulties surrounding gender identity.

We are a group of parents of transgender children and young people, who found that on each of our journeys, there has been limited support on offer for our young people and our family.
We came across LGBT+ groups for teenagers and adults, but nothing for younger people and their families.

So here we are.
Three mums who wanted to change that, so we created the support network ourselves.
Not just a traditional group, Flutterbys wants to offer so much more and we do so by welcoming and involving the whole family.
Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Brothers and Sisters, the more the merrier!
We are super friendly and very understanding.
We are all on this incredible journey together and Flutterbys is one amazing family.

What we do?

Flutterbys offers support for everyone in the family, we are here to help you on your journey.

  • We offer friendly personal support whenever and wherever you need us.
  • We can help with information and any questions that you might have.
  • We have a forum to share experiences with other families.
  • We have a monthly meet up for everyone to join in.
  • We are always available to speak to.

As a group we aim to offer families and children a safe space where they can feel relaxed, are able to express themselves and talk freely without fear of judgement from others.

Meet the team

Heather

Hi, I’m Heather and I’m mum to Emily (11), Holly (7) and Finlay (5).

In 2012, Holly was born, but as Toby.
Holly was never interested in boys toys, clothes or even race cars!
Holly instead wanted to dress up as a princess, she loved dressing up with her older sister and make up.

Holly started to wear more girly clothes, inside at first and then out and about, until one day Holly just became Holly. Holly has never been a Toby, she has always been our daughter.

Holly was referred to the Tavistock and we’ve had some fantastic support from our local camhs and GP.

We’ve also had the amazing support together and this is why we have joined to create Flutterbys. I hope that you find Flutterbys a safe, warm and friendly group and I am incredibly proud to be a part of Flutterbys.

Jody

Hi, I’m Jody, mum to Amy (17) and Ash (13). Amy was born male and in November 2015, She bravely told me that she was transgender. In that moment, my life as I knew it, changed for ever. In a daze, My husband and I suddenly found ourselves navigating strange and alien waters. A world where new terminology and confusion lay at every corner and we were ‘lost’ as to what to do.

Seeking support through our GP, we were saddened to learn that there were no local support groups for families like mine. With desperation, I turned to Facebook and through social media, I have been most fortunate to befriend two amazing mums who also are on this ‘journey’ with their wonderful children. Together we have created this supportive group, Flutterbys.

So it is my hope now, that Flutterbys will provide a local, safe and friendly haven for parents – whether they be first setting out on this journey, or like my family, have been supporting their children for a while now.

Lizzie

Hello I’m  Lizzie and I am a mum of 4 I have a 12 year old daughter named Tilly. Tilly was born Nathan but from a young age never followed the stereotypical expectations of a boy. Helicopters and action figures there were none, mermaids and princesses there were plenty, we were given all the excuses under the under the sun e.g it’s a phase, he has autism so it’s an obsession friends disappeared people said things  and my child became unhappy. I decided to listen to what he had to say the GP helped and our journey began. From the age of 6 Tilly has been a very happy girl.

We have decided to put this group together so there is a place for everyone to feel safe and supported.

I’ve shed a few tears and felt alone but I have made some friends and you can too it can feel scary and totally overwhelming at times but that is ok and your not alone

Flutterbys is here to help you with your journey
